What you should know about ART Treatments?

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is the fertility treatment to achieve pregnancy through various procedures such as in vitro fertilization in which eggs are removed surgically from the woman and mixed with the sperm in the laboratory dish. The embryo created is then transferred into the uterus or are donated to another women. Besides IVF, the other procedures of ART include artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and surrogacy.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies can be used by the infertile couples to avoid the fertility problems while preserving the genetic connection relationship with the child. The first test tube baby was born in 1978 in Britain and by 2012, about 1.5 million ART cycles were performed annually worldwide. It was estimated that more than 5 million babies had been born since first IVF procedure till 2014. Generally, ART treatments are recommended when other treatments have been unsuccessful. In some cases, there may be a severe male infertility or tubal obstruction.

In-vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET), and frozen embryo transfer (FET) are the main procedures that comes under ART. With the development in ART sciences, in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer is having the largest market segment due to its higher success rate. In order to increase the success rate, time lapse imaging system is used during the treatment procedure where clear picture of egg division are recorded and fate of embryo has been decided.

The developments in the assisted reproductive technology is likely to increase further due to growing number of infertility cases, rising disposable income, increasing number of smokers, obese population and stress levels. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally 1.9 million obese and 600 million people were diagnosed to be overweight. According to a study states that six out of ten people suffer from stress at work place. One in seven couples globally experience some form of infertility.

Infertile couples who seek treatments through fertility clinics usually get in touch with surrogacy agencies. Surrogacy agencies in India have tie-up with the fertility clinics.

Why women donate eggs to help infertile couples

Women who choose to donate eggs to help infertile couples become aware of the procedure after going through a psychological counselling done by the egg donation agencies.

According to a new study, woman who acts as an egg donor felt a sense of pride in helping an infertile couple, who otherwise would not have been able to conceive by themselves. Two-thirds of women who donated eggs reported satisfaction with the process, the study found.

The process of egg donation is primarily operated by the egg donor agencies in India. To get an idea of what the egg donation process is like for a woman in India, the experts believe infertility is a growing concern mainly in urban cities and many college going student girls come forward to donate their eggs in order to help prospective parents.

Infertile women who receive donor eggs
There can be many reasons for women who are infertile as infertility is a complex disorder. Some women were born without ovaries or had their ovaries surgically removed or went through menopause at an early age. A lot number of women are able to carry a pregnancy without having any difficulty if they receive eggs from another woman.

In some specific cases, there are healthy women who are carriers of serious genetic conditions that could be passed on to their children if they conceive by using their own eggs. These women are in need of an egg from a woman who is not a carrier of an inherited disease, and with the help of fertility specialist, the risk of passing the disease to their children is eliminated.

In addition, there are also patients who require donated eggs as they have the poor egg quality. Some women have diminished number of eggs or poorer egg quality during previous attempts at in vitro fertilization. Many of these women have crossed 30s or in early 40s; some have a history of endometriosis, a condition that can cause infertility. Their chances for pregnancy are considerably improved if they receive eggs donated by a healthy and younger individual who is not infertile.

The egg donation process and egg donor eligibility in India is quite a simple procedure, and is unlike IVF procedure.  Donated eggs are fertilized in a laboratory dish with the recipient's partner's sperm.
If you are a healthy woman aged 21 to 30, you can help anonymously by becoming an egg donor to a qualified infertile couple. All donations are strictly confidential as per the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines.

Importance of an Egg Donor in Assisted Reproductive Treatment

There has been a significant role of an egg donor in the process of assisted reproduction. According to fertility experts, the importance of egg donors is vital as far as the assisted reproductive technologies are concerned. Women, who left with no option of using their own eggs, can conceive with the help of an egg donor, using in vitro fertilization process. In this post, we will discuss you about the overview of egg donation with an emphasis on its screening and evaluation.

Who needs donor eggs?

Egg donation was primarily for women with premature ovarian failure (POF). As pre reports, POF affects 1% of the female population and this condition indicates the diminishing of a woman’s own eggs and cessation of ovarian function. So, the predominant indication of egg donation has been for women with diminished ovarian reserve but with intact ovarian function. In general, it is an established fact women who are over 40 years of age have poorer chances of conception with using their own eggs. This age-related issue declines fertility and affects the quality of eggs.

Besides women with premature ovarian failure, other women who require eggs to conceive through IVF include, women who have failed IVF attempts, women with poor egg quality, and women having genetic abnormalities.
Medical Examination of the Donor

A thorough medical examination of each potential egg donor is of critical importance, whether the donor is known or is anonymous. The potential donors must undergo testing so as to check communicable infectious diseases (e.g HIV, syphills) and genetic screening both via a detailed family history and specific blood tests which are determined by her ethnic background (e.g., for cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, thalassemia). A formal psychological evaluation is also performed.

Potential Donor is younger

Generally the donor is younger than 35 years old with enough medical evidence suggests the young donors have potent fertility and thus increases the chances of getting pregnant to the intended couple. These young donors approach to egg donation clinics in India, where after taking fertility medications, they submit their eggs.

According to ICMR guidelines, it is mandatory for fertility clinics to keep the information confidential about the donor profiles.

Role of Egg Donor in Third Party Reproduction

Couples who are planning for surrogacy seriously look for potential egg donors. They achieve a successful and healthy pregnancy, with the help of egg donor agencies in India. Nowadays, more and more women donate their eggs and help couples to create a family for them, who would fail to do otherwise.
